For Those Who Dream Monsters edition by Anna Taborska Reggie Oliver Charles Black Steve Upham Literature Fiction eBooks

Anna Taborska's collection of supernatural tales is quite something; a haunting set of tales that will take you to all sorts of dark and deliciously unpleasant places. This book is pretty much tailor-made for piling yourself into your favorite reading chair on a stormy day by the fireplace, especially with the wonderful header illustrations at the beginning of each story that are a nod to classic literature. You also find whole fresh territories of horror rarely (if ever) visited in the genre, particularly with Polish & Jewish folklore and bleak, wartime European settings. "The Girl in the Blue Coat" was my personal favorite, but that's like picking the best out of an excellent banquet. Go out and buy this one now - it's more than worth every penny.

For Those Who Dream Monsters edition by Anna Taborska Reggie Oliver Charles Black Steve Upham Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I adored this book. Cruel, uncanny, meticulously crafted, and beautifully written short stories. Each one a vicious universe into itself. My favorites were 'Cut!' which I enjoyed the black humor and the inherent madness of egos within the film industry. 'The Girl in the Blue Coat' was a haunting testimony to what happens when the evils of this world are festering in the shadows. Then there was 'A Tale of Two Sisters Rusalka' which actually made me cry. I'm obsessed with fairy tales of river spirits and this one is one of the best I have ever come across. Big, huge, giant recommendation.
I am not the greatest fan of short horror stories and even though the writing and imagery is very good the content and stories themselves were not to my liking. There were a few enjoyable moments and descriptions the best of which was the following....."like a moth that believes itself soaring towards the moon, only to find itself trapped in a house full of dusty light bulbs."....
Anna Taborska's spooky collection of her short fiction is a superb read. Starting with Schroingder's cat, each story builds on the terror and suspense leaving you with an increasing feeling of unease! Though there are a couple of stories here that did not quite work for me, this was more of a personal than a professional criticism and even those stories I was less keen on were still well written and came across as highly accomplished pieces of work.
This collection has a very old-world classic horror feel about it and many of the stories contained herein reminded me of works by such esteemed authors as Algeron Blackwood and August Dereleth in their style and nature but set in more modern and contemporary settings.
In fact, all of the stories in this collection are simply sublime and Anna Taborska certainly managed to achieve for me everything she set out to achieve namely to unsettle, disturb and unease me!
This is not a book to read before dark, nor a book to be read before bed unless you want to have nightmares.
Certainly many of these stories will stay with me in my head for a long time to come and that is always a sign of a good author!
I remember first reading this book on a day of train-riding towards Saxmundham. At one point the train could go no further -- some car had unwisely fallen off the overhead bridge and onto the rails -- and we all had to amble off into the night air. Clutching white-knuckled at my seat cushion, I did not want to leave the darkened train ... certainly not after hours spent reading of the things that go on in this book, if you just take just that one wrong turn. How can a book scare us so? When it reminds us vividly that there are some cellars you should not enter, some barns you should not open, some goats you should never purchase, some rivers you never want to step into, some lines you should never trespass, and some women you should never love. Despite this perfectly wise advice I'm giving, the London author Anna Taborska decides to pull us towards all of these. There are things that live in places and in people which I cannot describe, yet the artist/playwright Reggie Oliver dares the darkness and offers illustrations for every one of her stories. Her collection is never horror-lite. It is always unpredictable, sometimes sorrowful, often erotic, and at times gruesomely intense. I imagine the next time I, say, rent a cabin all alone in the woods, that this book will be inexplicably waiting on the bed stand ... just for me. And I will go through it all again! The book is like drinking tea with the devil there is elegance but it is still wholly unnerving, and the horns be sharp ... indeed, one of its stories bears that very name.
